Business Student Receives Habib American Bank Scholarship

The Cerritos College Foundation awards Omar Anderson with the $1,000 Habib American Bank Scholarship.

A Jamaican native has been named the recipient of the $1,000 Habib American Bank Scholarship, according to Cerritos College.

The Cerritos College Foundation awarded the scholarship to Omar Anderson of Los Angeles. Anderson, who moved from Jamaica to Southern California, began attending Cerritos College in 2009 and was impressed with the resources offered through the International Student Center, prompting him to become an active member of the student body. He has served as a senator in student government for the last three semesters and is a member of the International Student Association.

Anderson plans on transferring to the University of Southern California or California State University, Long Beach next spring to pursue his bachelor's degree in business and accounting.

The scholarship, which was established by Habib American Bank in 2004, is awarded to outstanding business students. The bank's chief operating officer Saleem Iqbal serves as a Cerritos College Foundation board member.

The Cerritos College Foundation is a non-profit organization that serves as a charitable vehicle for the community, individuals and alumni, to assist with financial support of Cerritos College beyond that which state funding supports. Last year, the Foundation awarded $170,501 in academic and need-based scholarships to deserving students, and provided $610,000 to support various academic programs at the college, according to the foundation's website.
