UPDATED: Cerritos College Student Dies After Collapsing on Campus

Matthew Tautolo, 20, died Tuesday afternoon after collapsing on the campus.

A 20-year-old Cerritos College student who was participating in a physical education activity collapsed on a campus field on Tuesday afternoon and later died.

Matthew Tautolo of Long Beach was pronounced dead at Coast Plaza Hospital in Norwalk, according to a statement released by the college's Public Affairs Department.

Lt. Joe Bale of the Los Angeles Department of Coroner said that his exact cause of death would be determined by an autopsy.

"Tautolo was participating in a physical education activity class on a campus field at around 2:30 p.m. He asked the faculty member if he could be excused from the class to retrieve athletic shoes from his car and then collapsed on the field," the college stated.

Shortly after Tatuolo collapsed, the faculty member and students nearby summoned help, drawing an immeadiate response from Student Health Services along with Campus Police. Los Angeles County Fire paramedics arrived minutes later to a report of a male "who was not breathing" and took the student to the hospital.

Doctors continued to try and revive Tautolo, but they were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at approximately 3:14 p.m., according to the college. 

Cerritos College Student Body president Jasmin Ramirez told Patch late Tuesday night that she believed Tautolo had tried out for the school's football team, however, the college says that he "was not participating on any of the athletic teams at the college," and that additional details of his passing were held until family notification was confirmed. (Note: The coroner's office does not release the name of a deceased individual until next of kin notification is completed.)

Cerritos College, which is located at 11110 Alondra Boulevard, began its Spring semester on on Jan. 9 following the Winter Break hiatus. The school while located in Norwalk is attended by several Cerritos and Artesia residents along with those living in Norwalk, Bellflower and other surrounding communities. 

The community colllege was founded in 1955 and serves an area of 52 square miles of southeastern Los Angeles County. The college offers degrees and certificates in 87 areas of study in nine divisions.
