Cindy Yen Chen Launches Campaign for Two-Year School Board Term

Cerritos parks and recreation commissioner, Cindy Yen Chen, kicked off her campaign last Saturday for the empty seat left by former boardmember, Mark Pulido.

Current parks and recreation commissioner and educator, Cindy Yen Chen, kicked off her ABC School Board campaign last Saturday at her campaign office in Artesia.

Chen’s supporters shared their praises and experiences with Chen in hopes to rally votes and endorsements.

Not new to local education, Chen is a well-known face in the community. She has served as a Foundation chairperson, FLAP Language Program teacher, Cerritos College instructor and a teacher and volunteer since 1994. Some of her city-based endeavors include being a Planning Commission chairperson in 2006, Rose Parade float volunteer, City Parade Participants coordinator and Festival of Friendship Participating Groups coordinator.

Packing her campaign office last weekend were boardmembers, colleagues, students, friends, family and past community head honchos.

Current ABC School Board member, Olympia Chen, said Cindy will best serve all the students of ABC.

“Cindy will also serve the best interests of the entire community,” Olympia said. “This outstanding candidate is talented, but most importantly, has a big heart.”

Also present at the meeting was ABC School Board president, Maynard Law, and his wife, Pat Law of the The Soroptimist International of Artesia-Cerritos.

“She’s (Cindy) always enthusiastic,” Pat said. “Always full of vitality and energy. Always smiles.”

Former three-time mayor, Diana Needham, also praised Chen’s talents in working for the city.

“Cindy was smart,” Needham said. “She did her homework. She wasn’t just a rubber stamper.”

According to Cindy, this has turned out to be a very heated campaign and election, but she's prepared for the challenge.

“I’ll be working very hard on this,” Cindy said. “I’ll be knocking doors every afternoon, and I hope everybody will open their door for me, talk to me and hear me out.”
