“The Story of Tsinoys: Chinese in the Philippines”

Susie Ling was born in Taiwan and raised in Los Banos, Laguna. She is Associate Professor of History at Pasadena City College and is a major CHSSC supporter.

Did you know about 20% of Filipinos have some Chinese ancestry? President Corazon Aquino, Cardinal Jaime Sin, and national hero Jose Rizal are some of the more famous "Tsinoys", or Chinese Filipinos. As the Philippines is so close to Fujian province, Chinese influence in Filipino culture dates back centuries and is as ubiquitous as pancit and lumpia. The first Spanish-established Chinatown was the Parian, which later became Binondo. These Chinatowns survive through massacres, revolutions, wars, and martial law.

This Powerpoint presentation is an overview of this fascinating history. AND, this is an opportunity for us to share a Filipino "merienda" (snack) and just be with people who love history.

When it comes to the FREE newspaper (or anything else that's free) -- the old saying applies: YouRead More get what you pay for.

To call this "rag" a newspaper is a joke. They only put partial truths, always sided to aRead More covert friend of the writer and never have done the background investigation to be able to establish validity!
