Mother and 5-Year-Old Girl Recovering After Being Hit By Car at Carver Elementary School

A driver who says his sandal got stuck under the gas pedal of his car, struck a woman and her child at Carver Elementary School on Thursday morning.

A woman and her 5-year-old daughter are recovering today after being struck by a car in the parking lot of  on Thursday morning, authorities said.

The accident occurred about 8:35 a.m. on Sept. 22 at the school located at 19200 Ely Ave. in Cerritos, Deputy Tom Hicks of the told Patch.

"The driver was backing his car out after dropping off his child, when he says he got his sandal stuck under the accelerator (pedal)," Hicks said. "His car backed up, went over a curb and planter, and the vehicle struck a woman and her child."

The woman, who was taking her 5-year-old to school, suffered broken ribs, and the child had a broken leg along with minor head injuries, Hicks said. Both victims were treated at Long Beach Memorial Hospital and later released, he added.

Hicks said that traffic detectives from the Cerritos Sheriff's Station were continuing to investigate the circumstances of the accident.
