Students Turn Recycled Junk Into Art

The Cerritos Recycled Art Contest for 2012 showed how creative students can be with eco-friendly household items.

The Cerritos Recycled Art Contest for 2012 produced some original and extremely creative eco-friendly works of art.

The recycled art came primarily from students attending elementary, middle and high schools throughout the City of Cerritos. There were three grade divisions—K-3, 4-6 and 7-12—along with an adult (18+) division.

The top three entrants in each division currently have their art project on display at the Cerritos Public Library across from the “Visions of the Universe” exhibit on the lower level.

Here are the winners in each division:

  • Autumn Machorro, Grade K-3. Autumn used metal cans, aluminum, bottle caps and buttons to create a smiling robot.
  • Isabella Doherty, Grade 4-6. Isabella used bottle caps, cardboard, tissue boxes and trash bags to make a cat. Isabella said, “If we recycle, there will be less trash dumps and that will save our homes.”
  • Andrew Veenstra, Grade 7-12. Andrew used cardboard, sheet music, magazines, discarded wire, glass filters and Dr. Pepper cans to create a ukulele. Said Andrew, “My love and appreciation for music inspired me. I hope my ukulele sparks people to realize that music can be made of anything.”
  • Elbert Lui, Age 18+. Elbert used paper towels, foam from packing material and cardboard to create “Bugs!”
