A Round of Golf Right Here in Town

Looking to play some golf? Why not try Iron Wood Nine, a golf course right here in Cerritos.

Though it has been open since 1977, many residents may not realize there is a golf course right here in the city of Cerritos.

resides just off Alondra along the San Gabriel (605) Freeway. It includes a nine-hole golf course, driving range, short-game practice area, putting practice area, diner and pro shop.

Every weekend the course is bustling with both avid and amateur golfers. The course ranges from short direct holes to long holes with water hazards and plenty of sand traps. Though the course has a strong mix of challenges, it is also perfect for beginners.

For a first time golfer, 18 holes can be a little daunting. Even the holes with water hazards have alternate routes so players can shoot around the water instead of over it.

The course is busiest on weekends, but players come throughout the week to play a round or just practice their swing on the driving range. During the summer, the course closes at sundown, but the driving range, which is brightly lit at night, doesn't close until 8:30 p.m.

One particularly interesting feature of Iron Wood Nine is its chipping practice area. At the end of the parking lot, next to the driving range, there is an area cordoned off that contains two small greens and a large sand trap for players to practice their short-game.

For new players and seasoned players looking to improve their game, this course offers many instructional classes throughout the year as well as private lessons.

“We have numerous programs throughout the week,” says Tony Kim, the head pro at Iron Wood Nine who teaches some of the classes himself. The classes offered include the Couples Golf Clinic and the Itsy Bitsy Golf Clinic for preschool children.

Iron Wood Nine even offers to have an employee play a round of golf with you if you are a first time golfer or need some help with basic technique free of charge.

Best of all, the green fees are incredibly cheap. For Cerritos residents, the fees for adults are $9.00 on weekdays and $10.00 on weekends and only two dollars more for non-residents.
