Cerritos Lady Falcons Fall to Mt. SAC in Softball Regionals

Mt. SAC hits 12 homeruns in the three games over the weekend to sweep the regionals, culminating with a 9-5 win over the Cerritos College Falcons.

The Mt. San Antonio College softball team punched its ticket to its third straight state tournament berth with a dominating performance in the Southern California Super Regionals.  The Mounties hit 12 homeruns in the three games over the weekend, culminating in a 9-5 win over the Cerritos College Falcons in the title game Sunday afternoon.

Mt. SAC hit six homeruns Friday night as it came from behind to defeat Saddleback College 8-3.  They would then hit five homeruns Saturday, beating Cerritos 11-0.

“I couldn’t be more proud of them,” Mounties head coach Kelly Ford said. “This (ability to hit the ball hard )is great, but it is all the hard work they do in practice is what makes this possible.”

Ironically, the Mounties did not need the long ball in Sunday's  win, although Freshman Alyssa Gonzalez did hit a three run shot in the seventh that proved to be the difference in the game.

Mt. SAC’s starter Alexa Limon, who pitched a one-hitter Saturday, took the mound again on Sunday. She gave up four runs on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts.  She would give way to Michelle Escamilla in the sixth with a 6-4 lead, but would then be promptly reinserted when Escamilla was unable to get any Falcons out.

“They (Limon and Escamilla) are very competitive and supportive of each other,” Ford said. “I put Alexa in because she has shown to have done better against Cerritos.”

Cerritos got on the board first as  Jessica Roper hit her sixth homerun of the year in the second inning.

Mt. SAC would then respond in the fourth inning as they batted around, sending 11 batters to the plate to score four runs in the inning.  They would add two more in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.

Cerritos would strike back with a three run homerun by Aina I’aulualo , her 10th of the year, to close the gap to 6-4.

“We fought and battled the whole game,” Cerritos head coach Kodee Murray said. “The heart  that Cerritos has shown goes unmeasured by anyone.”

Cerritos’s starter Jessica Lozano, who was also the starting pitcher in Saturday’s loss went all seven innings, giving up nine runs (eight earned) on 14 hits with four walks and two strikeouts. She also hit a batter.

“We played our game today as we did yesterday,” Murray said. “They were on a roll yesterday, and the momentum was going their way.”

The state tournament starts Friday at Bakersfield College.

Mt. SAC fell just short in last year's state  title game as Cypress squeaked out a 7-6 victory.
