VIDEO: Man Fights Swordfish for 16 Hours, Local Fish are Biting

Barry Brightenburg lost a 16-hour battle with a swordfish, great calico bass fishing this week and fun times on the Huntington Beach Pier for the Huck Finn/Becky Thatcher Fishing Event.

The San Diego tuna bite was excellent for the boats willing to make the 140 to 160 mile journey from Point Loma last week. Big catches of bluefin and yellowfin tuna were still being made through the weekend.

There were a few tuna being taken as close as 80 miles from San Diego, but anglers are hopeful that this may develop into a new area of tuna closer to home.

“The fish are hitting on Sardines, and chrome and blue jigs. It is a very good idea to have some 30 pound floral-carbon line, ring hooks and a rod belt too,” said skipper Scott McDaniels of the Sea Adventure 80.

Barry Brightenburg hooked a swordfish near San Clemente Island around 4 p.m. Saturday. He fought the monster for nearly 16 hours before the hook broke and the tireless fish gained its freedom. Capt. Jim Kingsmill from the Chaser reported that the swordfish was hooked on 30-lb test.
