What is Responsible Beverage Service Training?

Alcohol establishments are important businesses in Los Angeles and a vital part of our economy. However unlike other retail establishments alcohol sales can produce a wide variety of societal problems which are very damaging and costly to the community.Problems associated with alcohol like loud noise, graffiti and loitering can adversely affect neighboring businesses and residents. These problems if left unchecked can lead to bigger problems that can contribute to neighborhood blight. Research has shown that the majority of drivers on the road who have been found drinking are coming from bars and restaurants. Many cities in California are taking proactive measures to decrease the probability that patrons of licensed establishments will drink to excess therefore reducing the risks to public health and safety. Management policies are being implemented to help teach service techniques that help servers identify underage drinkers and intoxicated patrons. The goal of responsible service training RBS is to prevent the number of illegal alcohol sales to underage youth and intoxicated patrons through educational programs which:

• Train servers and sellers on techniques to identify and refuse service to intoxicated andunderage patrons.
• Help managers to develop and implement policies that help servers/sellers understandstate, community, and establishment level alcohol policies and potential consequencesfor failing to comply with such policies.
• Train security and staff to manage problem behavior without it escalating to aggression or increasing the risk of danger to others.
