Cerritos Real Estate Consultant Walks For a Leukemia and Lymphoma Cure

Ron Jung will hold a fundraiser and silent auction Sunday night at Artesia's Great Seafood Harbor Restaurant for his two half-marathons.

For Cerritos real estate consultant Ronald Jung, the journey to help sufferers of leukemia, lymphoma and other related diseases started with a piece of paper.

“My son in law had a flyer [about participating with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training] and I decided to get with it because I didn’t want to be a couch potato,” he said.

Although his competitive experience consisted of a 5K race in Cerritos a decade ago and that he doesn’t have any close family or friends with leukemia or lymphoma, Jung said it would be a good way to stay fit at the age of 62 and help those living with these life threatening illnesses.

Since May, Jung has brought his awareness for those suffering from leukemia, lymphoma and related diseases to the community. He will participate in two half-marathons later this year—the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco and the Disneyland Half-Marathon.

“For every dollar that is donated, 76 percent of it will go to research,” he said, noting that he will donate money to local hospitals such as Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, USC Medical Center and UCLA Medical Center.

at the on 18329 S. Pioneer Boulevard in Artesia. Tickets are $30, with VIP tickets at $40.

He is hoping through his efforts to reach the community by holding fundraisers, he would raise $10,000 for the Society. So far he has gone on his “one man campaign” to city council meetings in Artesia and Cerritos, promoted his cause on social media sites such as Twitter and has networked with community organizations such as the Lions Club.

At age 62, Jung admitted he is “stretching it” with the two half-marathons, but said the vigorous training is no match for those suffering with this disease, especially those in chemotherapy. To prepare for his two half-marathons, he walks about six miles per day and trains twice a week with his team of 30 people at local parks in and around Cerritos.

Despite the rigors of training for these two half-marathons, Jung insists that winning a race is not the most important thing.

“I’m not going to be the fastest, I’m not going to be the slowest, but I’m hoping to clock at 15 minutes a mile,” he said. “If I’m tired, I’m tired. There’s no prize other than I’m fighting against cancer.”

While he is striving to raise money for leukemia and lymphoma research, he ultimately wants to be an example for his grandchildren.

“I want to set a model for my grandkids that they can be able to do what they want to do if they put their mind to it,” he said.
