With those words, the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station began its five-mile leg of the 339-mile LASD Memorial Torch Relay run Friday night.
More than 50 sheriff's deputies, soldiers and people from the community came together on bikes and on foot to complete their 5-mile leg of the 35th Annual Los Angeles Sheriff's Department's Memorial Torch Relay run Friday night from the Cerritos to the Lakewood stations. The three-day relay run began at 9 a.m. Friday at the Sherman Block Sheriff’s Headquarters Building in Monterey Park. The Cerritos Sheriffs took the flameless white torch from the Norwalk Sheriffs about 10:20 p.m. and completed their zigzag route through Cerritos and Artesia to the Lakewood Sheriff's Station in about 45 minutes. This Saturday, the City of Cerritos Recreational Services Department will host “Family Fun Day, Safety Expo and Open House” at the Cerritos Swim and Fitness Center. The event is free and will run from 1-4 p.m. The public will have an opportunity to tour the indoor Olympic-sized pool and fitness center, while the center’s staff will be conducting family-style games to encourage active recreation. Activities include water balloon toss, potato sack race, three-legged race and spoon-and-egg race. In addition, a water polo “Swim, Pass, and Shoot” contest will take place in the pool for ages 8 and older. The Swim and Fitness Center is located at 13150 E. 166th St. in Cerritos. More than 600 students from Ventura to San Diego will convene on Whitney High School Saturday for the 10th annual Model United Nations conference.
Whitney High School in Cerritos will be hosting its 10th annual Model United Nations conference this Saturday at the campus from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. More than 600 students from high schools from all over Southern California, including San Diego and Ventura, will be there. Among the topics students will be debating are “A one-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli problem”, “United Nations Security Council Reform”, and the “Impact of China on World Trade.” In addition, there will be experimental committees, including a Historical Security Council, a crisis committee set in Cyprus and a Harry Potter committee. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County dropped 1 cent today to settle at $4.395, falling for the second day in a row after increasing for seven consecutive days. The seven-day streak of increases ended Thursday with a drop of two- tenths of a cent. The price rose 17.9 cents during the streak, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. Despite the back-to-back decreases, today's average price is 11.9 cents more than one week ago, 16 cents higher than one month ago and 18.9 cents greater than one year ago. Who can resist a sleek male in a tux? The colony of 13 Magellanic penguins got a head start on their breeding season when they moved into the new June Keyes Penguin Habitat at the aquarium, reports the Press Telegram. Assistant curator Rob Mortensen told reporters that caregivers were surprised when the flightless birds, most of whom arrived several months ago, began pairing up and laying eggs before their aquarium home was done. One pair is already raising a chick and another group is attending to hatched eggs. "We didn't expecting them to start breeding so quickly," Mortensen told the Press Telegram, "but apparently Mother Nature took over." National Bike to Work Day is one part of a month-wide celebration of cycling.
For most of us, slogging through traffic is just part of the work-week routine. But if you live close enough to consider biking, Friday is your day. May 18 is National Bike to Work Day, a push that encourages biking as a way to save time, money and the environment. The day is part of a month-wide celebration, Bike to Work Month. According to the League of American Bicyclists, California is the 20th most bicycle-friendly state in the U.S. Washington State is No. 1. The U.S. Census says only 1 percent of L.A. commuters are bicyclists. Biking to work in this area isn't the easiest feat, but it's possible in some parts. Flowers, records and mementos were left on the late singer's Walk of Fame star on Hollywood Boulevard Thursday.
By late Thursday afternoon, Donna Summer's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame had amassed a variety of mementos left by fans following the announcement of her death in Florida. The Hollywood Historic Trust had placed a wreath filled with pink roses, yellow orchids, snapdragons and Queen Anne's lace. Fans had left handwritten messages, candles and a sparkling tiara on the star. A couple TV reporters were stationed in front of the star for the early evening broadcasts. News vans were parked close by in a line. Summer's star is located in front of 7000 Hollywood Boulevard, adjacent to the Roosevelt Hotel. I only ride a bike to work. It's a free workout, saves money - no car payments, insurance, gas, parking. Better for the economy no pollution. More people need to exercise instead of driving to work if they can, your body will love you for it! :)   more ›
