Jerry, although not original from here, became a true L.A. native. The truest, perhaps, than anyRead More luminary in memory. Like Randy Newman, he LOVED L.A. He reflected the dichotomous nature of Angelenos -- down to earth and hip Hollywood glamour. The chants in rival arenas when the Lakers played ("Beat L.A.") simply revealed their envy of Los Angeles and an erroneous image of L.A. as purely superficial and phony. True, Buss was flamboyant and a playboy. But he was also a self-made man, rising from his austere humble upbringing in Iowa where he rummaged trash cans for phone books to use as firewood to heat the tiny home he lived in with his mother. I was fortunate enough to meet Jerry Buss at Chasens restaurant where I was celebrating my mom and dad's anniversary. I was shocked when mom walked right up to his table and introduced herself as his mother's hair stylist. I had no idea. "Is this your granddaughter?" she asked. No mom, she wasn't. And I hadn't the heart to inform mom of Buss's lifestyle. We can only hope any sibling rivalry amongst the Buss children will be put to rest in the interest of Los Angeles ... and to honor the memory of the greatest owner in sports franchise history.

Thanks, Jerry, for giving L.A. such a GREAT basketball team all these years. We won't see the likesRead More of you again. R.I.P.

Truly a nice man, very down to earth, did not flaunt his wealth. I was a news photographer coveringRead More the LA` sports scene, when Buss purchased the JKC sports domain we all asked who is this guy (none of us in the media had ever heard of him)? He turned out be a blessing to the LA sports scene, he was approachable, taking time to converse with you and was always humble. Just a plain nice man. Unlike Cook he was always present at his teams games and did not sit in the owners box but among the ordinary fans. RIP Dr Buss your legacy will remain long after any of us have departed

Actually, Trisha, you are wrong about the title. This article is posted on multiple Patch pages. I'mRead More looking at it under the Banning-Beaumont Patch. I also assume that when Peter posted, the article DID have a channel #, which was removed after his post. It wasn't rude, it was simply pointing out a discrepancy in the article, which was then corrected. Thanks, Peter, for pointing that out to the editors.
Trisha Bowler February 3, 2013 at 01:46 pm
I re read the above article and didn't see a channel number. All I saw was CBS. Don't know whereRead More you live but the title of this page is called "Diamond Bar-Walnut" Patch and here CBS is located on Channel 2. You were rude to the editor!

So instead of raising Fees to a market driven comparable cost as compared to other municipal coursesRead More we will end up having Advertising in Parks and Playgrounds? Also, even with the Fee increase the Golf Courses will still have an operating loss? What financial genius came up with this? This sounds like the old joke about losing money on every sale but making it up in volume. Put the Advertising on the Golf Courses, charge fees that are comparable to other municipal courses and maybe if no one steals the cash at the Starter Shack when the fees are paid they may break even. Or, just convert them to Public Parks. What’s the annual number of Golfers using the land on a per Sg Ft basis vs. the number of people using parks on a Sg Ft basis? Why should non-golfers have to financially support golfers?

"Reality Check" needs a reality check: what does Oprah's interview with Lance ArmstrongRead More have to do with "military service", and AR 15s? She's a business woman and entertainer.

When I see Major League Baseball, the NFL, the AFL, the NBA, the NHL and the NCAA publish andRead More enforce a real drug policy, I will believe someone has become serious about this issue. In the meantime I see a lot of posturing and worthless statements but little to no action. If we want to see our kids idolize people who use and condone the use of drugs, that is what we have now. It’s a sad commentary on what we have grown to accept.

PJM, this is a free enterprise system and as far as I know, no US laws have been broken. The realRead More issue here is as I and now others have mentioned, want the youth of our country following the lead of these players who have chosen to play outside the lines of the game. I only use the NFL seemed like and I still think it is as did MLB in the recent HOF voting results begin setting the bar for future players. I do not care if one has more legal liability than the other. One good example might be the labeling of cigarette packaging with the warning health labels..... now do you see, it really doesn't matter how it happens, just as the Surgeon General's warning is to try to prevent smoking and inherent damage that may occur, but it also in a sense allows the tobacco companies some if very limited liability from Suites of the legal variety. It's all good in my book, but not the use of Steroids in MLB!

Isn't it ironic that people who complain about paying more for something tangible they actually get,Read More are so quick to vote for more of someone else's money to be taken away, and for no benefit to the loser?! I mention this because the majority of voters in Cerritos are liberal democrats who support expanded re-distribution of wealth as evidenced by the last election. But yet here they sit in the council chambers complaining about their money being taken away through an increase. Aint hypocrisy funny?

Hi Jon, there should be a staffed table outside the restaurant where you can make a direct donationRead More to the cause -- so you don't necessarily have to dine-in. Hope that helps!
Jon October 13, 2012 at 03:53 am
I can only make it around 3:25 p.m. and can only stay for 10 minutes. I don't know whether to getRead More lunch or dinner. Dinner hasn't been doing it for me the past few years. On the other hand, I don't quite trust where lunch stands with me. I hate making decisions. Is there any way I can donate to the Special Olympics of Southern California and the Sheriff's Department directly without attending the event?
