Whitney Students to Host Political Debates

More than 600 students from Ventura to San Diego will convene on Whitney High School Saturday for the 10th annual Model United Nations conference.

Whitney High School in Cerritos will be hosting its 10th annual Model United Nations conference this Saturday at the campus from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. More than 600 students from high schools from all over Southern California, including San Diego and Ventura, will be there. Among the topics students will be debating are “A one-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli problem”, “United Nations Security Council Reform”, and the “Impact of China on World Trade.” In addition, there will be experimental committees, including a Historical Security Council, a crisis committee set in Cyprus and a Harry Potter committee. Whitney High School is a public college prep school for students grades 7th through 12th in the ABC Unified School District. …

Here's what you can expect at the Food Truck Rally at Cerritos High School for the evening of Thursday, May 17.

Wrap up the final stretch of your work or school week with a deliciously good visit to the Thursday night food truck rally at Cerritos High School. If you haven't had the chance to check out the weekly food truck fair, the event showcases a variety of mobile vendors each Thursday night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cerritos High parking lot along 183rd Street. Motorists in the parking lot are reminded to always be cautious of pedestrians. And don't forget that a portion of the proceeds from the sales are donated to the school, so eat up, enjoy and help support these local students! Here's what you can expect at the weekly Food Truck Rally at Gahr High School for the evening of Tuesday, May 15.

Don't feel like making dinner at home this week? Drop by the Tuesday night food truck rally at Gahr High School and take your pick from a plethora of delicious dinner options. The weekly feast takes place in the school's parking lot along Artesia Boulevard each Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Motorists in the lot are reminded to always be cautious of pedestrians. And like all the other school-hosted food fairs, a portion of the proceeds from the sales will be donated to the school's activities fund. Nearly 800 Graduates Honored at 2012 Cerritos College Commencement Ceremony

The commencement ceremony was held on Saturday, May 12; more than 1,600 students are receiving degrees and certificates this year.

Cerritos College honored nearly 800 graduates during its 55th annual commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 12. The Cerritos College Board of Trustees and administration presented degrees and certificates earned during the 2011-2012 academic year. Over 1,600 students are receiving degrees and certificates this year. Dr. Roz Rosen, Director of National Center of Deafness at California State University, Northridge, served as the commencement speaker and inspired graduates to embrace diversity and community, and wished them success with their personal, career and community aspirations. ABC School Board Honors District's Four Distinguished School Recipients

Four ABC School Board schools were honored for receiving the title of Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education.

On May 1, the ABC School Board honored the four district schools that were listed as 2012 Distinguished Schools. These schools were selected for their efforts and results in trying to narrow the achievement gap. Principal Deborah Berlyn of Carver Academy, Principal Patrick Walker of Wittmann Elementary, Principal Melissa Valentine of Kennedy Elementary and Principal Tom Tracy of Stowers Magnet School of International Studies were all present at the ABC School Board meeting. Berlyn said Carver focuses on helping all its students, rather than just the gifted and talented ones. “It's the best time ever that the kids have,” Berlyn said. "They truly love it. Honda's Helpful Guys in Blue Crash Cerritos College Campus With Free Mugs of Coffee

Stressed out students gearing up for finals on Wednesday enjoyed free mugs filled with coffee during the visit.

The SoCal Honda Helpful Guys in Blue successfully handed out complimentary college coffee & reusable mugs for the students of Cerritos College on Wednesday. Buzz got around fast in the central quad area of the campus and more than 500 reusable mugs (that read “Mugs Not Drugs”) filled with a total of 20 gallons of complimentary joe were enjoyed all morning by students. Gearing up for finals, students welcomed the Helpful Guys in Blue with abundant gratitude, and even spent some time hanging out at the Helpful tent … hey, it’s a study break. Most students were stressed about finals and said they were overwhelmed with studying so it was a nice break from the monotony of constant schoolwork.   Here's some firsthand feedback from students …

U.S. News & World Report Ranks Cerritos' High Schools Among Best in State & Nation

The publication measures the ABC Unified School District's high schools in Cerritos against others in California and the U.S. -- Whitney High School is considered the 31st best in the nation.

Whitney High School is one of the top 10 high schools in California, and is considered the 31st best school in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report. Cerritos High School and Gahr High School were also in the rankings.  The online news publication released its annual list of the "Best High Schools" in the country Tuesday. According to the report, the rankings are developed in conjunction with the Washington-based American Institutes for Research and are determined using math and English proficiency, college readiness and the ratio of students to teachers. Whitney High Senior Receives Angier B. Duke Memorial Scholarship Worth More Than $200,000

Sayoni Saha of Cerritos has been named one of 15 high school seniors who will be receiving a full ride to Duke University in the fall.

Sayoni Saha, a senior at Whitney High School, is one of 15 students who have won the prestigious Angier B. Duke Memorial scholarships -- a full scholarship to Duke University worth more than $200,000 over a four-year period, the university announced Thursday. Each of the recipients will be receiving full tuition, room and board, and mandatory fees for four years, as well as a six-week summer study program at the University of Oxford in England. They are also offered up to $5,000 for research or other educational enrichment programs, according to the school. Sayoni resides in Cerritos with her parents Sharmila and Krishnendu Saha.
