Cerritos City Council Finds Ways to Accomodate Pickleball Play in Community

The Cerritos City Council tried its best to give pickleball players a home while making sure residents near Westgate Park don't lose their tennis court.

On April 23, the Cerritos City Council hosted an audience of devout pickleballers trying to secure a permanent playing courts at Westgate Park. But after a lengthy discussion, the council came to the conclusion of allotting pickleball playtime at Whitney High School, while making sure the pickleball court and equipment at Liberty Park is tended to and provided by the park's staff. Finding A Home for Local Picklers  Pickleball is similar to tennis in that it is played on a hard floor court with a net between the players. Wiffle balls, in place of tennis balls, are hit by wooden paddles instead of racquets. Branded a sport that is intergenerationally friendly (with local player ages ranging from 6 to men and women in their 70s), pickleball …

WATCH: Former Artesia High Guard Suffers Concussion in Lakers Game vs. OKC Thunder

Lakers forward Metta World Peace will likely be hit with an NBA suspension for his flagrant-2 foul on Artesia High alum James Harden.

The Lakers' thrilling 116-106 double-overtime win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday afternoon at Staples Center was overshadowed by the flagrant-2 foul committed by Metta World Peace (formerly known as Ron Artest) in the second quarter on Artesia High School grad James Harden.  World Peace had just completed a fast break dunk, when he threw his elbow in celebration, striking Harden on the left side of his head and knocking him to the ground. World Peace was immediately tossed from the game, and Harden did not return to action after being evaluated by a doctor in the locker room. Off the Hook: Fishing Report

Gigantic Great White Shark Caught in Mexico on Sunday

Many Southern Californian's don't know that these apex predators visit our beaches every year.

We're going to need a bigger boat. That thought had to have crossed the minds of two commercial fishermen in Mexico who hauled up a great white shark reported to measure nearly 20 feet and weighing more than 2,000 pounds. The apex predator was caught in net Sunday in the Sea of Cortez near Guaymas. The fishermen said it was dead before it reached the surface. Pisces Sportfishing in Cabo San Lucas reported the catch on its blog Tuesday morning. "We were amazed and immediately realized that we had a huge, dead, great white shark, and then we thought what are we going to do?," Guadalupe told Pisces. Outdoors reporter Pete Thomas posted stories on the incredible catch to Pete Thomas Outdoors and GrindTv.com. It was quite a chore to get the …

If that is an 20ft shark, than the kid leaning over it must be pretty tall himself. My estimate based on proportions is 10-12, I guess being there that close probably made it feel as if it was 20ft.   more ›

Grand Prix Notebook: Rahal-Andretti Feud After Marco Takes Flight?

The new car goes airborne, there's a rookie mistake, and Esteban Guerrieri leads every lap to win Indy Lights race.

If there was a scary moment in the 38th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, it came on Lap 22 when Marco Andretti took flight. It was notable because it marked the first time that the new Dallara chassis—designed to prevent cars from going airborne after touching tires—has yielded such a result. A pod behind each of the rear tires is supposed to prevent cars from going into the air when tires make contact, but Andretti took off after running up the back of Graham Rahal during a wild sequence in the first half of the race.  Vice president of technology Will Phillips will review the accident before commenting about the pods and what might have happened, and whether any changes will be made to the structure of the chassis, according to an …

Will Power Wins The Grand Prix of Long Beach

The driver for Roger Penske holds off Simon Pagenaud, who knocked off a second a lap over the final 12 laps.

Will Power was in position to run away with the 38th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on Sunday, but Simon Pagenaud had a finishing kick like few in the sport have ever seen. Chopping off a second per lap for the last 12 laps, Pagenaud moved from third place to the rear Power's Dallara before finally running out of time in the 85-lap race. Had it been 86 laps the outcome might have been different, but Power ended up winning his second race in a row, and gave team owner Roger Penske a sweep of the first three races of the IZOD IndyCar Series season. Power's magin of victory was 0.86 seconds, and though he got the victory, it was Pagenaud's performance that stole the show. With 12 laps remaining, he was in fourth place and down by more than …
